Hippy-tude: The Attitude of Gratitude

Hippy-tude: The Attitude of Gratitude
by Lori Gebbie

Every day, we are faced with choices. The biggest choice we face most often is how we react to a situation we're in.  For example, my Mother-In-Law is passing. I could get all dramatic about it, but it's starting to hurt now (lung cancer), so I hope it's speedy. The greatest gift I got in my marriage was a MIL who was semi-enchanted by me. And I was as interested in hearing her life stories as she was in hearing about mine. Great lady, had a good and interesting life, but no mourning. Glad she touched my life, glad I felt her spirit, happy knowing she'll be twirling in the fields again very soon. Hippy-tude. It's all in how you face it.

Saw a post from a friend, her car broke down in the middle of nowhere, she happened to find a way to an auto shop, but the repair would take overnight. She found a sweet little campground right next to the shop and just really enjoyed a peaceful interlude in a hectic life. Hippy-tude.

When your cake hits the floor, but it lands right and you can just cut off the "tainted piece" and still have enough to share. Hippy-tude.

It could be worse, it just depends on how you want to view something. Hippy-tude. Take gratitude in the things you DO get out of your experiences, the positives, and leave the negatives to blow away in the wind.

Slaying the Dragons Within

Everyone has battles they fight in their everyday life, such as family and job stresses. But what of the wars that rage within one’s own self? The ever-weighing scale between the things we know which are right, and the deeds we have done that are wrong. Even a young child knows when they act in a way that hurts others without cause. We can assume, with the rare exception, that most people recognize the basic concepts of good and bad.

We all start with the same scaled down version of the rule book. So where did humanity go so far away from following our own natural and true nature? What pains and injustices must we have suffered and forced on each other to steer an entire society so far from its course? Do we even care about the road our world takes in facing its future?

The true nature of the beast lies within. It is not always in the accomplishments, but the intent that our internal balance will weigh. At the end of the day, one should claim they have done their best or been the best person they can be. Any time people enhance or improve their inner self, they add to the advancement of our world as a result. From a small act of kindness extended to another, a multitude of people’s lives may be enhanced, like a tidal wave forming from a single drop of rain. The accumulated experiences of an individual’s life have much to do with creating the person they become; history has great influence over the path of the future. Often the unresolved fears and guilt of the past create the blocks that obscure people from a more peaceful and happy tomorrow.

Clear the roadway between who you are now and the greater individual you will be. The greatest truths awaiting discovery are within the things we already know, but often fail to understand. Woven within the experiences and observations of life are each person’s individual perspective of the truth. The goal is to tell our own selves the truth. The only thing standing between a person and their discovery of inner peace is the person themselves. While we react to exterior influences, we do have control over the person we are within.

Only three conditions need to be met for people to be happier and more peaceful individuals. Forgive yourself for the mistakes of your past, honestly identify the qualities that need improvement about yourself, and always move forward. Simple in concept, but almost impossible in application. Few people dare to brave the horrors of climbing deep into themselves and discover the glorious spirit that resides within. But a more peaceful and wonderful future awaits those who do!

Just yesterday;

Just yesterday, an acquaintance of ours turned a bitter attitude toward us. How can we be so peace loving and always looking toward a better tomorrow, when the world seems to be going up in flames? How can we tell everyone to focus on themselves, when their environment is demanding so much time from them? How can we continue to talk about love and peace and growth, when all around us is burning down? Don’t we know the state of the world? Don’t we know that unemployment is skyrocketing, and people aren’t going to be able to feed their families? Don’t we know that our government is out of control and will destroy us all?

Now, it would have been very easy to think of this person as a negative, someone who feeds off of their own misfortunes; someone who isn’t interested in growth at all, but is destructive to themselves and their environment. In fact, it was really tempting. But, we took some time and continued our conversation, and found they were being hit with a great deal of stress and circumstances. With a little bit of prompting, the bitterness began to turn to understanding, and the angst lessened. Positive seeks positive, negative feeds on negative.

We didn’t offer a quick solution, we didn’t take their problems away. But we did give them a better mindset to deal with their situations, and a better belief in themselves and their abilities to overcome the obstacles in their life.

Sometimes you need to rebalance and focus, so you can determine what is most important to YOU. We used to be wrapped up in what our friends had, and wanted the same or better for ourselves. But those objects never satisfied, there was always bigger and better. And bigger and better cost more and more money. So we had to work harder and harder. And there was always something just out of reach that we just had to have. The turning point for us came when the economy turned and were faced with layoffs. We had to decide what was important, and in doing so, we cut out a lot of the unnecessary expenses in our lives. We also started spending more time working on our personal relationship with each other. And the most amazing thing happened! We became happier.

When we form our own expectations in our lives, we see our goals attainable. We don’t need a new car if ours is dependable and running fine. We don’t need a brand new big screen television if our regular television still works. We don’t need to work overtime and stress ourselves out to earn enough money to take a vacation to distress and relax. We’ve left the daily grind, and take each new day as an adventure. Of course, we have our responsibilities and commitments, and maintain them. But we are more at peace with what we are and do.

Re-evaluate your goals, be happy with your level of success, don’t let others decide your happiness for you.
